Getting custom blinds used to mean showroom visits, awkward sales chats, and a four-week wait for someone to show up with a toolbox. At Blinds4u, we decided that was all a bit much.
Our answer? A refreshingly streamlined process that puts the power (and tape measure) in your hands. From measuring up your space to placing an order and installing the final product, it’s all designed to be something you can actually do, without second-guessing your choices or watching YouTube tutorials late into the night.
Here’s how it works.
Step One: Measure
Measuring sounds simple until you realise it’s not just about stretching a tape across a window and hoping for the best. But don’t worry. We’ve done everything possible to take the second-guessing out of it.
First rule: measure properly, not approximately. That means using a steel tape, not the fabric and making sure it’s flat and pulled tight. Always work in millimetres (we know centimetres feel easier, but blinds don’t care how neat your maths is). Millimetres matter.
A few key points:
- Measure each window separately, even if they look the same. You’d be surprised how often they aren’t.
- Decide on your fit first: inside or outside. This changes how we manufacture your blind, so don’t wing it halfway through the order.
- For roller blinds, your width measurement is from bracket to bracket, not fabric edge to edge. The actual fabric will be 30–35mm narrower.
- Double-check everything before submitting (and then check it again). We make blinds to the exact measurements you give us. If the numbers are wrong, the blind will be wrong. Simple as that.
Need help? Our how-to-measure guide is detailed, straightforward, and specific to each blind style. There’s a video too. And if something’s still not clicking, get in touch; we’d much rather answer a quick question now than have you frustrated later.
Step Two: Ordering
We know what online ordering can be like… endless dropdown menus, unexplained options, and by the end, you’re not entirely sure what you just paid for. That’s not how we do things.
Our process is designed to make sense from start to finish. Start at our online shop, choose your blind type, and everything flows from there. You’ll see live pricing as you build your blind, so there’s no confusion when you get to checkout.
Here’s how the order process works in real life:
- Choose your blind type: vertical, roller, venetian, timber, PVC.
- Pick your colour and material: you’re unsure, just ask, we can send colour info or organise a sample.
- Enter your measurements using our measurement guide as a reference.
- Review and confirm your custom order, and once payment’s sorted, we start manufacturing.
One of the big benefits of ordering online with us? You avoid all the extra margins. You’re dealing directly with the people who make the blinds. That means better pricing, better support, and far fewer complications.
Plus, every blind comes with our 5-year warranty, and we don’t make you jump through hoops if something goes wrong. If there’s a genuine issue, we prioritise getting it sorted.
Step Three: Installing
You’ve got the blinds, opened the box, laid everything out, and are now eyeing your drill with cautious optimism. Good news: you don’t need to be a builder, a sparkie, or the family DIY hero to get your blinds up. You just need a few tools and a little patience.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- A power drill with the right bit
- A screwdriver
- A pencil
- A step ladder
- Possibly a coffee, but that’s your call
How it works:
- Install the brackets. Different blinds have different bracket types, these screw into the frame (inside or outside the recess depending on your fit). Our instructions cover each variation.
- Slot in the blinds. They’ll either click or lock into place. Use a level if you’ve got one; eyeballing it only works until you open the blind and it looks like it’s going downhill.
- Secure the brackets. Once everything’s aligned, close and lock them into place.
- Check functionality. Operate the blind a few times. For verticals, attach the slats. For rollers, make sure you install the chain stoppers, that’s essential for warranty cover and safe operation.
Need extra support? Our how-to-install page has PDF guides, installation videos for each blind type, and tips for every step. We’ve also labelled everything clearly in your order, so you’re not guessing what goes where.
Why Do We Operate Like This?
Because it just makes sense, for us, and for you.
This setup keeps our prices lower than traditional retailers because it means no third-party installers, no rep commissions, no inflated “consultation” fees hidden in the final cost. It also means you’re in control at every stage. You choose the product, you set the timeline, and you know exactly what you’re getting.
And because we manufacture everything right here in New Zealand, we can guarantee quality, fast turnaround times, and proper accountability. No offshore guessing games. No delays while someone checks with a supplier six time zones away. If there’s a question or issue, you talk to us, the people who actually made your blinds.
So yes, we’ve kept things simple. But behind the simplicity is a system that’s efficient, direct, and designed to work better for everyone involved, especially you.
